Step 6 - Tone

The tones in your drawing are the varying intensity of lights and darks. You do not have to rely on your shading skills here... at least not your pencil skills.

Try using your finger to smudge your shaded blocks into smoother tones. Get a good kneaded eraser (knead the eraser until it's nice and warm and pliable) Use it to pick up some of the darker tones to make them lighter. You are literally dabbing (not erasing) on the shaded areas to lift off your pencil makings. Try using a paper towel or a stomp (a rolled paper stick used to blend drawings). Remember to use your eraser as a drawing tool. Just imagine you are drawing with white.
